When people think about joining a gym they almost always know WHY they want to. The issue isn't knowing why we need to exercise but knowing where to start.
Health, fitness and wellbeing is such a broad and popular topic, there is no shortage of information, opinions and options. Whatever your aim (lose weight, improve fitness, build strength, recover from injury, prevent future illnesses etc) always remember that any exercise is better than none! However, if you're going to go to the effort of taking out a membership and finding the motivation to visit a club and get stuck in then you really want to make your time spent exercising as efficient and effective as possible.
To take the example of weight loss (as it's obviously one of our most common requirements from new members), weight loss normally means fat loss. To lose fat you must eat well and exercise. Simple.
However, different exercises, routines and classes will burn more or fewer calories than others. This also depends, of course, on how old you are, your gender, how hard you work, how motivated you are and how well you perform the given exercises (not so simple...)
So choices at Oakwood start with "should I use the gym, eGYM or the classes?" If you were to choose classes, you might ask "which classes are best for me?" If you were to choose the gym you might ask "what should I do when I go, and for how long, and in what order?"
Not knowing where to start is one of the biggest issues when joining a club. If you use facilities, clubs and classes that aren't right for you then you won't enjoy it as much and you certainly won't achieve the results you want or should. This will ultimately be extremely demotivating!
So... where should I start??
At the beginning, of course.
If you haven't been to us before then go for the 14 day trial (£14). This starts with a 1 hour starter session with an instructor. We will ask obvious questions like "what are you trying to achieve? How motivated are you? What will be your biggest stumbling blocks? When are you typically available to attend, and for how long? Will you be coming with a friend?" Etc...
When we are clear about these things we can start to make recommendations. Often, what we recommend to customers isn't what they would naturally choose if we simply gave them a membership card and a class timetable. That's because people don't understand the content of various sessions and classes so end up going for 'safe options'.
At Oakwood we're confident we have classes from gentle introductions all the way up to intense classes for the advanced. We also have our new BASICS sessions which are 30-min instructional sessions to go through specific exercises and topics slowly, building confidence as well as knowledge.
If you progress to a full membership...
If you decide at the end of your 14 days to come on board and sign up then we provide three 30-minute sessions to get you properly set up at Oakwood. You'll learn how to use the kit. You'll then get a Boditrax scan (so we know how your weight is made up and what we need to work on). Finally, and crucially, you'll get a personal fitness programme so you know exactly what to do each time you visit.
So in summary...
